Chap Goh Meh (15th night of Chinese New Year) is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day. This is a day where the typical Chinese come together to pray and offer offering to their ancestors. Lanterns are hung all around their houses and fireworks are released. There will be a huge number of activities going on such as lion dance, and cultural performances. In the olden days, young maiden would write her name and contact number on a tangerine and throw it into the sea. It signifies that the girl is available for marriage. But in the modern days, this culture has turned into a competition. Girls would be throwing out oranges into the sea and the guys would be scooping up oranges by boats and the boat with the most oranges win the competition.
Most of the people thought that this culture was pass down by China culture but the fact is, it originated from Penang, Malaysia. Drop down to Esplanade in Penang during Chap Goh Meh to enjoy the environment and experience the tangerine competition held annually in Penang.
